The Research Experience for Community College Students (RECCS) is a nine-week paid summer internship designed for community college students to immerse themselves in their first research experience by pairing them with a research mentor. The program is designed to increase participation in STEM related fields by supporting students from various backgrounds. RECCS focuses on a mix of hands-on research combined with professional development, mentorship, and community building to help students develop a science identity.
RECCS contributes to increased persistence in STEM, and a gain in research skills, the understanding of the scientific process, and self-efficacy with mentors playing a big role in that. Many of our participants go on to transfer to four-year universities, pursue additional research opportunities, and others continue to graduate education endeavors.By centering community college students in authentic research experiences, RECCS contributes to strengthening and diversifying the next generation of scientists.
