Abstract

Girls On Rock (GOR) is a tuition-free pre-college program consisting of a 12-day wilderness expedition to explore the Rocky Mountains through scientific research, artistic expression, and technical rock climbing. The program is designed for youth, ages 16-17, and seeks to broaden the representation of and support the next generation of geoscientists as participants explore their identity and build their confidence as scientists, artists, outdoors people, and leaders. The program serves nine participants each year and is facilitated by three instructors, including early career scientists and a certified mountain guide. While in the field, participants design and conduct their own research projects, which they present to a public audience at the end of the expedition. Participants are also able to earn a microcredential highlighting their acquired skills. After the expedition, the participant cohort continues to grow together through post-expedition programming designed to prepare them for higher education and careers in the geosciences. Participants in the most recent cohort shared, "Prior to this, I was really scared to do research. But now I found out...it's quite fun, actually, and quite interesting too. I can spend time outdoors and do science. It's great." Initial program feedback provides insights into the program's effectiveness in shaping participants' identities and the likelihood of pursuing careers in the sciences, with additional insights to come given IRB approval for this year's evaluation.
