Abstract
The North Central Climate Adaptation Science Center (NC CASC), which covers the states of Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana, advances actionable climate adaptation science through a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach. Hosted by the University of Colorado Boulder and supported by a diverse consortium of universities, Tribal organizations, and NGOs, the NC CASC develops tools, syntheses, and capacity-building programs to address regional climate challenges. Its work centers on six priority management issues-including habitat loss, connectivity and transformation; water availability and drought; wildlife disease; invasives and encroachment; wildfire; and phenology-and four key ecosystems: freshwater/riparian, grasslands, sagebrush steppe, and mountainous regions. The center emphasizes Tribal engagement, integration of Indigenous knowledge, and cross-cutting themes such as ecological transformation and human dimensions of climate adaptation. Through science support, rapid assessments, and partnerships with national programs, the NC CASC empowers practitioners to make informed, ethical, and locally relevant adaptation decisions.
