The MagMapper app enables citizen scientists to detect and verify the locations of undocumented orphan wells using only a smartphone. Of the estimated 3.5 million abandoned oil and gas wells across the United States, only 2 to 3 percent are adequately documented and verified. MagMapper provides a low-cost detection solution by measuring magnetic anomalies created by buried metal well casings. This project is supported by the US Department of Energy.
