Abstract

We present an interactive webpage hosted by NOAA PSL that shows the synoptic conditions, precipitation development, and recurrence intervals associated with historical extreme precipitation events. The webpage allows a user to display multiple durations of quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) and average recurrence interval (ARI) at both regional and continental US scale. In addition, six meteorological variables can be shown at intervals from seven days prior to the event throughout the entire duration of the event. This webpage is designed to be continually updated over time, beginning with a list of events spanning 1996-2024 that will grow in the future. We intend for this webpage to be used by a broad community including probable maximum precipitation practitioners, weather and climate researchers, and the general public. This project is a joint effort between CIRES, CIRA, NOAA PSL, and NOAA GSL in support of NOAA’s Probable Maximum Precipitation Estimation Modernization project.
