EOMF-19. CrowdMag 2023 Update!

Abstract
CrowdMag is an initiative by NOAA/CIRES that enables smartphone users to investigate the Earth's magnetic field using their phone sensors. In the past year, we have achieved several milestones. (1) We released a major update to the CrowdMag app that allows users to collect magnetic data while on commercial airline flights. (2) We are collaborating with the CIRES outreach team to develop a version of CrowdMag called MagVar, which will enable users to collect magnetic data related to space weather; we have also made progress in working with community scientists and school teachers in the Alaska region, partially funded by the CIRES IRP. (3) Our RECCS summer student, Holly McCrory, successfully mapped the magnetic signatures of the geological feature "Iron Dike" in the foothills near Lyons, Colorado. (4) We developed phone-specific calibration models using machine learning to reduce noise in the data collected by CrowdMag. Looking ahead, we are seeking funding for the CrowdMag effort to fully realize its potential. CrowdMag has great potential on both the science side and on the Citizen Science/STEM side as a valuable tool for involving students in their own scientific research projects.
