Explain your research, data, or science concept in a fun, engaging, and accessible way with the CIRES science illustration contest.

This contest is being hosted by the Strategic Imperative #4 committee as part of a larger project to “enhance the impact, accessibility, and reach of our science and data to the broader scientific community, NOAA, educators and students, policymakers, and the general public.”

Access slides and recordings of trainings on graphic design, video and animation, and data visualization on this page:

Guidelines:

Submissions should be scientific in nature but do not have to directly reflect your current work. Illustrations should be made for a non-science audience and the intended audience can be either general or tailored to specific groups like students, policymakers, community groups, etc.

Submit your science illustration in one of two categories:

  1. Static visualization (infographic, data visualization, illustration, etc.)
  2. Moving visualization (animation, video, simulation, etc.). NOTE: There is a time limit of 5 minutes for moving visualizations

Please also indicate if you want your submission to be voted on social media for a fan favorite award (optional choice for all entries).

NOTE: entry includes your permission to publish on CIRES social media platforms.

All submissions must be original and made without the use of AI.

Judging Criteria:

  • How well does it communicate the concept?
  • Is it clear?
  • Does it meet basic graphic design/infographic principles?
  • Does it use plain language?
  • Does it suit the intended audience?

The deadline for all entries is 5 pm on May 2, 2025. Winners will be announced at CIRES Rendezvous on May 15.

Prize: Gift cards and promotion of the winning illustrations; prizes are subject to change.
